Kyrgyzstan or is 4×4=16?

For many years, we have been organizing motorcycle events in Kyrgyzstan. For the first time we have decided to arrange a car event. It is not intended for off-road veterans. If on a daily basis you drive an Opel or Ford you can manage this. This event is for anyone who wants to spend holidays in an “analog” way. Kyrgyzstan is far away and we do it in a fly & drive arrangement. Once on the spot our cars are waiting for. This will be the Mitsubishi Delica or Land Cruiser. We would be most willing to see people with children who come to show them that there are worlds without computers or smartphones, where often there is no radio signal coverage than it is and a credit card is best suited to scrape the windows of a 30-year-old Audi. In the capital everything works similarly to European cities, but with every kilometer you travel back in time. All this in a beautiful natural setting and under the care of an experienced off-road guide to help you overcome the obstacles that we will undoubtedly encounter. We will not drive from dawn to dusk. There will be guitars, bonfires, cooking together… You are supposed to come back from this trip better people than before. If so we will feel that the trip was a success.

  • Date of start – 2.07.2017
  • Date of finish – 12.07.2017
  • Duration – 11 days
  • Difficulty level – 5/10
  • Attractions – Tien Shan mountains, Song Kul and Issyk Kul lakes.
  • Day Zero: – You arrive to Bishkek. We change money, do some shopping for essentials. Coffee drinkers can buy coffee, tea addicts – tea. The beer drinkers – beer. And all get instant Chinese soups.
  • DAy One: – We start at Bishkek and on the crowded highway we are heading for the Too Ashuu pass. It is going to be hot, also under the bonnets. We have to climb up to 3,200 metres and then we are driving down through the valley of Susamyr and turn left to Talas. Green valleys and snowy peaks will impress you. In the evening we reach Besh Tash National Park and stop at some dramatic spot on the river where we set up our bivouac.
  • Day Two: – On this day we will not drive too much. Instead, we will wander around the magic Besh Tash lake, visit the Manas mausoleum, and we drive to the Kirov artificial lake. We know a fine spot for our tents. After all it is summer – a good time to do some swimming.
  • Day Three: – Enough of asphalt – the next days will be gravel, ups and downs, dust and lack of civilization. Finally, after this we came here. Another night under the stars. Little chance for a bonfire, because there is not much wood here, but the guitar will be there.
  • Day Four: – The scenery changes slowly, today we face two steep climbs, magnificent canyon and descent into the valley of Fergana. It will be hot. In the evening, accommodation on the warm river. Good fish and starry sky. Acomodation without tents.
  • Day Five: – Through the Kaldama pass we are reaching a different world – the one of Nomads. Horses, yurts etc. But in the night we will check our tents again.
  • Day Six: – Today we arrive to Song Kul, the magic lake located high in the mountains. Lots of yurts and cattle bred during summer. We are going to stay in one of the yurt camps.
  • Day Seven: – Song Kul. It is July but the high mountains have their rulers. The area is famous for its changing weather. There may be snow, rain or sun. All this on the same day. We hope for a beautiful day, some horseriding. And last but not least – impressive snapshots.
  • Day Eight: – Tash Rabat. This is our favourite part of the route, with a favourite pass called MELS, which is an abbreviation of Messrs. Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin. That view from the pass… In the afternoon we get to Tash Rabat, one of the few relics of Kyrgyzstan. This is a stop on the caravan way to China. The Silk Road ran through here. Accommodation in a yurt.
  • Day Nine: – Eki Naryn. On theast asphalt we reach Naryn, where we get some food supplies. We follow the river to the mountains. With each kilometer it will be more wildly. Mountains will grow, and the rivers flow faster and faster. Accommodation in tents.
  • Day Ten: – Issyk Kul. On this day we drive up to the pass, which is 4,000 metres high. To drive higher in Kyrgyzstan is impossible. A special prize awaits us – a downhill gravel highway down to 1,655 metres. To the Issyk Kul itself. Overnight in a guest house.
  • Day Eleven: -To Bishkek. We will drive along the largest Kyrgyz lake and in the afternoon we reach Bishkek. On our way we visit a fairytale gorge, and if the timetable allows – also a salt lake.

I have had dozens of 4 x 4 trips, mainly in south-eastern Europe and South Africa. Kyrgyzstan, however, is quite different. More varied than anything I have seen. There are trails surrounded my woods and rocky ledges, like Bieszczady pastures and alpine dangerous bends. But we are going the rout a winch will not be necessary. It is to be a much more pleasant experience in a beautiful natural setting than the extreme 4 x 4 adventure with pulling out of the mud. On the other hand, high mountain passes and the weather will write their own secenario for us.
